The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art is a scholarly centre which was founded in London in 1970 following a donation from Paul Mellon, an American philanthropist. It was established "to advance the education in, and appreciation and understanding of British art." It celebrates and supports the study and research of British art. and architectural history from the medieval period to the present day. The Center is part of Yale University and a partner to the Yale Center for British Art.
The library collections cover British painting, sculpture, drawing, prints, decorative arts, architecture and garden history from the medieval period to the present day. It comprises almost 20,000 books, pamphlets, and theses. Particular subject strengths are British artists; collecting and patronage; the Grand Tour; the study of art history in the UK; collections of British art; and the country house. The main emphasis is on the art and architecture of the British Isles, including Ireland.
The Paul Mellon Centre’s Archives and Library collections are open to everyone and there is no charge for accessing the materials. Anyone wishing to consult any Archives & Library material in person at the Centre must first register as a reader. To do so, follow the procedure on this page.
