About the Royal Academy of Arts' Library

For more information about the Royal Academy of Arts, please check this page

The library was established at the same time as the Royal Academy, in 1768. It holds a comprehensive collection of books and exhibition catalogues on British art, artists and architects, with a particular concentration on the life and practice of past and present Members of the Royal Academy and the history of the institution, its exhibitions and collections. The library also holds a special collection of illustrated books and a collection of Historic Book collection.

Accessing the library

The library is open by appointment only. Anyone with a legitimate reason to consult their collections is welcome to make an appointment. Most of the collections are not on open access so it is easier for you and the staff if you let them know which books, archives, or works on paper you wish to consult prior to your visit.

To book an appointment, email library@royalacademy.org.uk
