Academic Writing: Essay

An essay is a discussion around a topic - you are supposed to argue for and against an idea or proposition and come to a reasoned conclusion using mainly theoretical evidence (what you have read).

The essay is a traditional method of university assessment that invites you to explore concepts and issues in depth. In coursework, it allows you flexibility to consider and compose your answer with time to do this; in exam situations, you'll need to decide the format of your answer quickly.
