Harvard Referencing : Referencing and plagiarism

What is referencing?

Referencing is a way to support and acknowledge the sources you have used to write your essay, dissertation or paper.

In the Harvard style, referencing is a two-part process :

  1. Citation in the text: brief indication of the source within the text of your work immediately following the use of the source
  2. Reference list: complete list of all the cited references used in your work with full bibliographic details
Why reference?

What is plagiarism ?

Plagiarism is the act of plagiarising the work of someone else.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, to plagiarise is to copy texts or take ideas from someone else's work and use them as if they were one's own. This concerns published as well as unpublished materials and all types of materials (eg books, magazines, journals, videos...).
