Academic Writing: Dissertation

Usual name for research projects undertaken as part of undergraduate and taught master’s degrees. Dissertations are usually written for an academic audience.

A dissertation is a coherent piece of writing divided into several well-defined chapters. It is completed towards the end of your degree programme and is an opportunity to showcase the skills and knowledge that you have developed in taught modules.

A dissertation is a research project completed as part of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Typically, a dissertation will enable you to present your findings in response to a question that you propose yourself. It is probably the longest piece of academic work you will produce.
