The Fan Museum is the only museum in the UK devoted to the history of fans and the art of fan making.
The Museum is housed in two grade II* listed houses - particularly important buildings of more than special interest - that were built in 1721. In addition to the building itself, the museum includes an orangery, a Japanese-style garden, and a pond.
The Museum has a collection of over 5,000 fans and other fan-related cultural materials. The oldest fan dates from the 11th century.
The permanent display teaches the visitors about fan history, manufacturing processes, and the various forms of fans.
This exhibition is a celebration of the performing arts, showcasing fans that portray the arts and are used in performance. On display is an intriguing mix of high quality and mass-produced fans. This exhibition aims to take its audience on a journey of discovery, blending a diverse assortment of objects into- it is hoped- a coherent and thought-provoking whole.
