About the Fan Museum

The Fan Museum is the only museum in the UK devoted to the history of fans and the art of fan making.

The Museum is housed in two grade II* listed houses - particularly important buildings of more than special interest - that were built in 1721. In addition to the building itself, the museum includes an orangery, a Japanese-style garden, and a pond.

The Museum has a collection of over 5,000 fans and other fan-related cultural materials. The oldest fan dates from the 11th century.

The permanent display teaches the visitors about fan history, manufacturing processes, and the various forms of fans.

Fans in the Age of Jane Austen

17th September - 21st March 2026

The museum bring you an exhibition showcasing a variety of fans depicting a range of themes surrounding the 18th century and early 19th century society, many of which were experienced by the celebrated Jane Austen and as seen through her works. This is our homage to Jane Austen as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of her birth this year!
